Romans 7 Without The Confusion
from King's Banner Podcast Hosted by Justin Hart
Romans 7 is one of those chapters people quote when they feel stuck, ashamed, or exhausted: “I keep doing what I hate.” But if we treat that paragraph like the whole story, we end up with a Christian life defined by excuses and defeat. We want better than that, so we open the text, read it carefully, and keep it anchored to the larger message of Romans: justification by faith alone, the purpose of God’s law, and the shift from flesh to Spirit. We talk through the big interpretive camps that show up around Romans 7, including antinomian readings that shrug off obedience and more “pious” readings that quietly assume real change is impossible. Then we trace Paul’s logic: the law is holy and good, but it also exposes sin, gives language to what our hearts already do, and leaves us face-to-face with our inability to produce righteousness through willpower. That’s why isolating Romans 7 can be so disorienting, especially when you ignore how hard Romans 6 pushes against continuing in sin and how strongly Romans 8 announces freedom and “no condemnation” for those in Christ Jesus. We also get practical about modern buzzwords. When is “addiction” a real category, and when is it a cover for a sin pattern we don’t want to put down? What is legalism actually, and why do people use the word to deflect correction? If you want a clearer Bible study framework for Romans 7, law and grace, sanctification, and life in the Holy Spirit, you’ll leave with categories that restore hope and sharpen repentance.
