Romans Chapter 10
from Chains to Godliness · host Jim & Jody Carmichael
Romans 10 explains that Israel possessed great religious zeal but lacked a correct understanding of God’s righteousness. Rather than submitting to God’s way of making people righteous, many attempted to establish righteousness through their own observance of the law. Christ is the goal and fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.Paul teaches that the word of faith is near and capable of being understood and obeyed. Genuine faith involves believing in the heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and openly confessing Jesus as Lord. Salvation is offered equally to Jews and Gentiles, for “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”However, people cannot call upon Christ unless they believe; they cannot believe unless they hear; and they cannot hear without someone proclaiming God’s Word. Therefore, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Israel’s problem was not that God’s message had never reached them, but that many refused to believe and obey what they heard. The chapter demonstrates that saving faith is not merely hearing or mentally agreeing with the gospel—it is a trusting faith that confesses Christ, calls upon Him, and responds obediently to His Word.
