Romans Part 10 – Romans 3:1-9 Verse 1 • “what advantage hath the Jew, what profit is there to Circumcision?” – After what Paul says at the end of Romans 2 this is a logical question and one Paul anticipated would be asked. Verse 2 • “much every way” – There was many advantages to being a Jew – Rom 9:4-5 – Paul is still not dealing with this present age – Gal 3:28. • “chiefly” ~first in order, prototype – 1Tim 1:15-16 • “unto them were committed the oracles of Gods” – The Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God – Psalms 147:19-20, Acts 7:38, Duet 4:5-6 Verse 3 • “what if some did not believe” – Israel as a whole was not a believing nation – John 1:11, Matt 23:37, Acts 7:51-53 • “the faith of God” – God entrusted Israel with his law, he gave them the responsibility of keeping the law and teaching his word. – Exo 19:5-6, Duet 4:7-8. • “of none effect” – If God entrusted Israel with his law and they do not believe, does this mean God is a liar? Can we trust God? Could Israel’s unbelief spoil Gods plan and make him a liar? Verse 4 • “God forbid” – by no means. • “Let God be true and every man a liar” – We can make this a great application in our life. Always trust God and his word and not what man says or the culture, God cannot be untrue - Num 23:19, Exo 19:5-6, Jer 31:31-34, Rom 11:25-27, 2Tim 2:14. But man most definitely is – Prov 21:2, Psalm 62:9. • “That thou mightest be justified” – quoting Psalms 51:4 – The point is put blame where it belongs, on man. Verse 5-6 • “If our unrighteousness commends Gods righteousness, is God unjust to to judge us? - The logic Paul is using here could be an objection that one might ask. • “I speak as a man” - because the logic Paul is using is an objection to Gods judgement and it’s a flawed argument as he will show. • “God forbid” – By no means. Cause by that logic how could God judge the whole world? Verse 7-8 • “If the truth of God abounded through my sin to show Gods glory, why am I judged?” – If my sin contributes to Gods glory then God she like my sin and not judge me. • “Let us do evil that good may come?” Would be the conclusion of this flawed thinking. Some actually teach that God ordained sin, and that some were predestined to hell for the glory of God. • “as we be slanderouy reported and some affirm we say” – If any is preaching pure grace there will be those who will accuse them of being antinomian and preaching licentiousness – Rom 5:20-6:1 • “whose damnation is just” - This phrase is in contrast to the previous flawed logic, saying, "sin=a display of God's righteousness=God's glory, therefore no judgment should be given" while all the while the sinners damnation is just. Verse 9 • “Are we better” – the Jews who had an advantage. • “No, in no wise” – The Jews are not better because Paul has proved all are under sin in the previous chapter and a half – Rom 1:18-2:29 – Paul in the next few verses will quote from the prophets to show that all have sinned to finish setting up our need for grace and he will begin explaining the mystery and this dispensation we’re in today.
