Summary
Romans Part 15 – Romans 4:18-25 Verse 18 • “Who against hope believed in hope” – Abraham believed in “hope”. What was this hope? – That he would be the father of many nations even when he and his wife were old = against hope. Abrahams hope was different than our hope, 2 different gospels – Gal 3:8. i. The subject matter is the Abrahamic covenant, not Abrahams personal salvation. • “that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be” – Gen 15:1-6 – We also believe that which is spoken – 1Cor 15:3-4 Verse 19 • “not weak in faith” – Because his faith was in God. • “Considered not his own body now dead, neither the deadness of Sarah’s womb” – Phil 3:3 – not the name it claim it. Verse 20 • “He staggered not at the promise of God” – But – Gen 16:1-4, 17:15-19, 18:11-15, Heb 11:11-12. • “Strong in faith” – Because of who his faith was in. Strong faith is not a requirement for salvation because it is not faith that saved but the object of faith. The “chair” example. i. Faith is strengthened through understanding Gods word – Rom 10:17, Matt 16:1-12. • “giving glory to God” – because his faith was in God. Verse 21-22 • “being fully persuaded” – Rom 3:4, • “what was promised he was able to perform” – Abraham was fully persuaded that God could perform what he promised that Abraham would have a seed from Sarah. • “therefore” – because he believed, was fully persuaded, had faith in Gods promise. • “it was imputed to him for righteousness” – Not because Abraham was righteous but because of his faith in God. Verse 23-25 • “now it was not written for his sake alone, but for us also” – it was written that righteousness was imputed to Abraham by faith so that we could point to that and say God can impute righteousness to us by faith in Christ finished work. – 2Tim 3:16, Rom 15:4. • “to whom it shall be imputed” – Righteousness. • “If we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead” – Like Abraham our faith is in God. • “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification” – Unlike Abraham our faith is in the death and resurrection of Christ for our sins and justification. – 1Cor 15:1-4, Eph 5:2.
