Romans Part 16 – Romans 5:1-5 Verse 1 • “Therefore” – Because we are justified by faith. Rom 2:1,26, 3:20,28, 4:16,20-22. • “being justified by faith” – having been justified, having been declared righteous. • “we have peace with God” – A spiritual blessing – Eph 1:3, 3:8. There is only one way to have peace with God and that is trusting the gospel. i. Israel had a sacrifice peace offering they could give – Lev 3. ii. This why the Body of Christ won’t go through the tribulation. – 1Thess 5:9 - but Israel could reap Gods wrath - Matt 10:34, Isa 13:13, Heb 3:8-11, 10:26-27. iii. The book of Revelation does not concern the Body of Christ - Rev 6:4,16, 16:1. • “through our Lord Jesus Christ” – God is not condemning or chastening you for your sin because Christ has reconciled you through his cross – Col 1:20, Eph 2:11-17, 2Cor 5:18-19. Verse 2 • “By whom” - Christ • “we have access by faith into this grace” – Eph 2:8 • “Wherein we stand” – how do you stand in grace? By faith. Confession, tithes, baptism, church attendance, none of these cant put you into a right standing with God. Only faith in Christ work. – This is also a positional truth. If you stand in it by faith in Christ than nothing can remove you from it – Col 2:10. • “and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” – This is part of the mystery, that the Church will be glorified with Christ – Col 1:24-27, 3:4, Rom 8:18,30, Titus 2:13. Verse 3-4 • “not only so, but we also glory in tribulations” – Justified by faith, peace with God, standing in grace, hope of glory, but…… we still have tribulations (not to be confused with the great tribulation). • We don’t glory about or for tribulations and we don’t ignore them – Gal 1:4 - but we glory in them when we know things by faith according to the scripture – 2Cor 4:14-18. • “knowing that tribulation worketh patience” – Knowing Gods will and why he is longsuffering can give you patience to endure until Christ return – 2Peter 3:15, 1Tim 2:4, Rom 8:18 • “and patience, experience” – Experience ~approved, tried character~ - Patience will grow you and mature you. • “and experience, hope” – Hope ~joyful and confident expectation of resurrection/glorification~ because our faith is in God. Verse 5 • “And hope make the not ashamed” – Hope is a shame if uncertain, our future hope is certain because it is does not depend on our strength to make it happen. • “the love of God” – Rom 8:37-39, 2Cor 5:14-15, Eph 5:2 – not a romantic feeling – the love of God explained in vs 6-8. • “shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us” – Eph 1:13-14, 2Cor 1:22.
