Romans Part 33 – Romans 11-1-6 Verse 1-2 • “I say then, hath God cast away his people?” – Paul has been dealing with Israel and their rejection of Christ in the last 2 chapters. Israel heard and Israel knew but rejected the gospel of the kingdom. Has God cast them away? • Some say yes and spiritualize everything – If everything can be spiritualized then we are dependent on the theologians and cannot go to the Word to verify things. We also can’t truly know if “Christ died for our sins”or is supposed to be spiritualized? • “God forbid” – 1Sam 12:22, Jer 31:37, Psalms 19:14, Num 23:19. • “For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin” – Paul is proof that God has not cast away His people. • “God has not cast away his people which he foreknew” – Israel is Gods elect, his firstborn – Exo 4:22, Isaiah 45:4. • Elijah is used as an example of their being a remnant. Verse 3-5 • “vs 3&4” – Quoting from 1Kings 19:10,14,18 • 1Kings 19:10 – Same could be said of Israel in Jesus day/Acts – Matt 23:37 • “Even so then at this present time” – how many were at Pentecost? – Act 2:41, 4:4 – Notice it’s not “in every generation” but “this present time”. • “Remnant” - ~A small remaining quantity of something” – Who have we been talking about and from what entity is it that some remain here? – Israel. Estimates of 100,000+ Jews at Pentecost. • The remnant was identified during Jesus earthly ministry – Luke 12:32. Souls were added to that in the early Acts period. • “according to the election of grace” – Same as Rom 9:11 – God chose to give the promises to believing Israel. Verse 6 • A good verse to define grace. Just because you see grace does not mean it’s the church. • Noah found grace….. and so did Moses – Gen 6:8, Exo 33:17. • How was the promise given to Abraham, how was righteousness imputed? – Rom 4:1-5,13-16 • Israel pursued Duet 6:25 but God promised he would change how he operated with them – Ezek 36:24-27, Heb 7:19,22, 8:6-8 – Israel reject Christ and the New Covenant. • What is the it? – The election of the remnant. • Not Calvinism because even new covenant Israel could reject/disobey the Spirit – Heb 6:4-6, Acts 5:1-11. • The remnant’s saving grace comes in the kingdom – Acts 3:19, 1Pet 1:10-13, Acts 15:7-11 • That all are saved by grace in every dispensation is not the mystery of Christ.
