Romans Part 34 – Romans 11-7-12 Verse 7-8 • “What then?” – What do we say to the fact that the remnant is according to grace? • “Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for but the election hath obtained it” – Rom 10:2-3, Luke 12:32. • “and the rest were blinded” – The rest of who? – Israel. • “He hath given them the spirit of slumber” – Isaiah 29:10 – Vs 6-16. – Matt 15:7-9, 5:5, 11:2-6 • “eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear” – Isa 6:8-10 • This was the purpose of the parables – Isa 55:3, Matt 13:9-18, John 12:37-41 • “unto this day” – Israel was still blinded when Paul wrote Romans. Verse 9-10 • Paul is quoting from Isaiah 69. • Their table is the crucifixion – Vs 21-22 • The trap is that they should’ve believed but stumbled – Isa 8;14-15. • They crucified their messiah – Acts 2:36, 3:14-15 • They are blinded - vs 23 Verse 11 • “Have they stumbled that they should fall?” – Is Israel given up? Can they be saved? Fall here ~Cast down~ “God forbid” – By no means. • “through their fall” – Fall here ~trespass” • “Salvation is come to the Gentiles” – Those who believed and were part of the remnant – Luke 7:1-10, Matt 15:21-28, Acts 10. If you make this the Church then you will run into issues later in the passage. • We have dealt with Gentiles already in Romans 2:10 & 9:30 and saw that Paul wasn’t talking about the church. • “to provoke them to jealousy” – Who? Unbelieving Israel because Gentiles in the remnant received what they were promised – Acts 10:44-46. • If it is the church today then only during the Acts period as we do not have the earthly blessings that Israel was promised. Verse 12 •” Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world” - James 2:5 – Those we believed Christ was messiah – both Jews and Gentile. • “and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles” – Duet 28:28-34 • “how much more their fullness” – Isa 61:5-6, Gentiles part of the kingdom – Isa 60:1-3, Rev 21:24. • The church will not be here when Israel sees their fullness. • Israel cannot take the riches you have in Christ – Eph 2:6-7, 3:8.
