Romans Part 39 – Romans 12:6-10 Verse 6-8 • “having then gifts differing” Different gifts were given to members of the Body of Christ to edify it – Eph 4:7-12 – Given UNTIL we had the doctrine to grow up into Christ – Eph 4:13-16, 1Cor 12:31. • Gifts ~A gift of grace, free gift” – Gift in the Bible does not mean a natural ability or talent. • “according to the grace given unto us” – These gifts were given by grace, not earned. Given to perform a function not for show, or power, or money making. • “whether prophecy, let us prophecy” – Prophecy was given for the purpose to edify the church – 1Cor 14:1-5, 9-12, 16-19,26 • Prophecy would cease though – 1Cor 13:2,8-11. • “according to the proportion of faith” – That is, “the faith” the doctrine according to the grace given to Paul. • “Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering” – Wait – attend to, like a waiter – 2Chron 17:19. • “giveth with simplicity” – give generously without boasting, no strings attached. • “ruleth with diligence” – not lazily. • “mercy, with cheerfulness” – Not grudgingly. – The point of the the gifts was to establish Gods will and not their own. Verse 9-10 • Grace teaches us to do good works – Eph 2:10, Tit 2:11-15, 3:8 – Your old man is dead, so you can seek others good knowing who you are in Christ – Col 2:9-10, Rom 8:18. • “let love be without dissimulation” – Don’t be fake, masked, hypocritical – Unfeigned – 2Cor 6:6 • We love for Christ sake – 2Cor 5:14 – True love – 1Tim 1:3-5, 1Cor 13:4-8, Rom 16:17, 1Tim 6:3-6, 2Tim 2:14-18, 1Tim 1:19-20 – Good works come from right doctrine - Titus 2:6-8. • “Abhor that which is evil” – Amos 5:14-15 – The difference is we already received grace – Ps 10:3,101, 119:104,162-163, Prov 6:16-19, 8:13. • “cleave to that which is good” – When you cleave you leave – Gen 2:24. When you love good you will hate evil – 1Thess 5:21-22, Rom 16:19, Heb 5:12-14, 2Tim 3:16-17. All scripture can instruct us in that which is good. •”Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love” – Eph 4:31-32 • “in honour preferring one another” – Our liberty in Christ is for service to one another – Gal 5:13, 6:10, 1Cor 10:23-24, Phil 2:2-5. • A doctrine we find from Paul is that “we work with our own hand” and “provide for our own” – When you work and provide for yourself you meet your own needs and can give to others. You also will be less tempted to abuse or cheat others especially when you add contentment – 1Thess 4:9-12, 2Thess 3:6,10-12, 1Tim 5:3,8. If you have any questions my email is [email protected]
