Summary

Romans Part 42 – Romans 13:6-14 Verse 6-7 • For this cause” – That the powers are Gods minister for good. • “pay ye tribute also, render therefore to all their dues” – Pay your taxes……… mine go to the good things… • Jesus taught to pay tribute – Matt 17:24-27, Matt 22:17-22, John 19:15, Luke 23:2 • “custom, fear, honour” – Consider to whom it is due – I - Custom = taxes – Matt 9:9, 17:25. II – Fear – of the higher powers – Rom 13:4 – but not persecution – 2Tim 1:7 III – Honour – 1Tim 1:7, 6:16, 1Pet 2:17, 1Tim 5:3, 17, Eph 6:2 Verse 8-10 • “owe no man anything” – Not talking about taking debt but making sure you pay them on time, pay off debt quickly – Prov 22:7, 3:27-28, Eph 4:28, 1Thess 4:9-11, • “but to love one another” – Paul is making a comparison here that what we should owe men can never be paid back, and that is love – Rom 5:8, 2Cor 5:14-15, Gal 5:13 • “for he that love the another hath fulfilled the law” – Fulfilled is different than being under – Gal 5:14. No one should get from this that love for your brethren keeps the whole law, but that loving your brethren keeps you from breaking the law. • “vs 9” – A summary of the Ten Commandments, but only those toward the brethren. • “vs 10” – Love fulfills the law because love doesn’t work any ill to your neighbor – 1Cor 13:4-7 • Paul is not putting us back under the law. It would be a mistake to assume that love towards another is a full comprehension of the law. Verse 11-14 • “and that knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep” – The day is now, not tomorrow – Eph 5:14-17, 1Cor 15:34. • “for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed” – This is still true today – Tit 2:13 • Paul says our “salvation” is nearer, not our testing. We will not go through the tribulation. • Our salvation is not fully complete until the resurrection – 1Cor 15:51-57 • “vs 12-13” – The fact that Christ is coming back should motivate us to live righteously and not waste our time here as his ambassadors. • Paul gives a list of things contrary to those who walk in the day/light – We are children of light and should walk as so – Eph 5:8 • “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ” – We are dead to our old man and alive to Christ and are to put on who we are in him – Eph 4:24, Col 3:10. • “make not provision for the flesh” - We should not be thinking about how we can fulfill our will and desire, but Gods – Eph 5:17, Gal 5:16.
