Summary
Romans Part 46 – Romans 15:9-17 Verse 9-12 • “and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy” – continuing his thought from verse 8. Jesus came to confirm the promises to Israel. Part of the promise was that Gentiles would also receive salvation in the kingdom – Exo 19:5-6, Zech 8:20-23 • “vs 9 as it written” - Psalms 18:47-50 – A messianic psalm prophetic of the time after the arrival of the kingdom – see verse 43. • “vs 10 And again he saith” – Deuteronomy 32:43 – Also a prophesy of the future kingdom – Rev 19:2 • “vs 11 And again” – Psalm 117:1 – A Psalm of praise with only 2 verses. • “vs 12 And again, Esaias saith” – Isaiah 11:10 – another prophecy about the established kingdom – Isa 11:1-10 • Paul is not saying that the church today fulfills these prophecies. He is saying that Jesus promised salvation to Jews & Gentiles in prophecy – Rom 15:4,6. – There is no Jew or Gentile in the body of Christ. • Just because Gentiles are saved today does not mean Israel has no hope. Gentiles were always promised salvation. Israel promises will be fulfilled. Verse 13-14 • “Now the God of hope” – Titus 1:2, 2:13. • “fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope” - When you believe Gods word you will be filled with joy and peace, abounding in hope – Rom 8:18, 5:2. • “through the power of the Holy Ghost” The Spirit in us gives hope – Rom 8:15-16. • “I myself am also persuaded of you” – Rom 1:8, 16:19 • “full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able to admonish” – It takes goodness and knowledge to admonish a brother. Admonish has the idea of putting someones thinking in order, gently. Verse 15-17 • “I have written the more boldly unto you” – By what authority? Paul is here explaining his ministry and apostleship. • “because of the grace that is given to me of God” – This is why he is able to write boldly to the Romans. The words “grace given to me” are only found in Paul’s epistles, in reference to Paul – Rom 12:3, 15:15, 1Cor 3:10, Gal 2:9, Eph 3:2,7, 4:7 – This grace was given to Paul from God himself. • “That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles” - 1Cor 15:8-10, Rom 11:13 • “ministering the gospel of God” – Which one? – vs 19 – Acts 20:24, Gal 1:11. • “the Gentiles might be acceptable” – To God in Christ – Eph 1:4-6 – Paul explained how Gentiles could be acceptable to God – Eph 2:12-16 • “being sanctified by the Holy Ghost” – Eph 1:13, 1Cor 12:13. • “I may glory through Jesus Christ” – Paul gloried in Christ – Phil 3:8, Gal 6:14. • “in those things which pertain to God” – I believe speaking of the cross here – Heb 2:17, 5:1.
