Summary
Romans Part 6 – Romans 1:18-32 Verse 18-20 • “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven…. against all of men” – Paul is beginning this section where he is proving all men are guilty before God since the beginning when Adam sinned” • “That which may be known of God is manifest….. because God hath shewed it” – Creation shows there is a God (vs 20) Man can only study and understand what he sees and knows but there are invisible things. • “They are without excuse” – (They) – I believe Paul here is speaking specifically of those in the earlier days and not present Rome in his time, even tho it could be applied to even us today. Verse 21-25 • “because” – Paul is now explaining why the are with excuse. i. Knew God but glorified him not – They are not far removed from creation. Adam walked and talked with God – Gen 3:8. But they still rejected – Gen 3:5-7, 4:1-9,19,23-25, 6:5. ii. Were unthankful – 1Thess 5:18. iii. Changed the glory of God and worshiped the creation more than the creator – The foolishness of man to worship something lesser than God. • “Became” – The result of their sin and rejection of God i. Vain in their imaginations – Ecc 1:14, 3:19, 5:10, 12:8…..13 ii. Foolish heart was darkened – John 1:1-9 – God is light, if you rejects God you live in darkness. iii. Fools – Prov 1:7. Verse 26-27 • “God gave them up” (vs24,26,28) – To uncleanness, vile affections, a reprobate mind. i. Reprobate ~ Abandoned to sin, disallowed, rejected. (This is everyone without Christ) – Eph 5:7-10 – God let them do what they wanted. This is what man is without Gods intervention. God is the basis for morality and if you don’t want to retain God in your knowledge than you will do what you think is right in your own eyes – Prov 12:15, 21:2. • “women changed the natural use (sexual function), likewise men with men, against nature” – The Bible is clear that homosexuality is sin – Lev 18:22. • “receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet” – Gal 6:7 – disease? Population die off? Doesn’t seem to be a direct penalty from God but rather “God gave them up to their lust, their lust brought this recompense in themselves” Verse 28 • “did not like to retain God in their Knowledge” – They did not approve of having God in their Knowledge, they rejected God. So…. • “God gave them over to a reprobate mind” - God gave them over to a mind that lacked judgment. As they rejected God, God rejected them. “They judged God unworthy to keep in their knowledge, so God gave them over to a mind that cannot judge” • “to do those things which are not convenient” – Convenient~ befitting, not fit. Paul in the next 3 verses list 23 things that are not fit to do.
