Romans Part 9 – Romans 2:17-29 Verse 17-20 • “Thou art called a Jew” – Paul is now definitely speaking to a Jew – Thou = singular. • “restest in the law” – relied or leaned on the law for favor from God, salvation, blessing. • “makest thy boast of God” – Jews followed the one true God. • “knowest his will”- Jews knew Gods will for the sabbath, what meats to eat, if you change upon a birds nest with young in it and the mother sitting on it. • “approvest the things more excellent” The law and prophets. – Duet 4:5-8 • “guide of the blind, light to this in darkness” – Psalm 119:105, Prov 6:23, Matt 5:14-16. • “Instructor and teacher” – Babes here is not demeaning but implies ignorance. • “Form of knowledge and truth in the law” – Psalm 19:7. • Paul is saying very positive things about the Jews as they were to represent God and be a light to the world instructing them in the law. In the dispensation of the law the Jews had the truth. Verse 21-24 • Paul here is showing how under the law you are under a curse if you break it – Gal 3:10. • Paul just got through commending the Jew but now is going to make the case that the Jew should turn to grace. • “dost thou steal” – Mal 3:8 • “name of God blasphemed among the Gentiles” – Eze 36:19-28 Verse 25 • “Circumcision profiteth if thou keep the law” – is this true today? No. – Gal 5:6, Col 3:11 – Paul is speaking of time past – Gen 17:10-14. Rom 3:1-2 • “breaker of the law thy circumcision shall be made uncircumcision” – Not only if you didn’t keep the covenant of circumcision would you be cut off but also if you broke the law – Acts 7:51-53 Verse 26 • Why did God give the covenant and law? To separate his people from the heathen Gentiles – Exo 19:5-6. – so if uncircumcision does righteousness of the law won’t they be blessed too? – Gen 12:3, Rom 2:10, Ruth 2:5-12. Verse 27 • if the uncircumcision fulfills the law they will judge circumcision who transgress the law. • do we Gentiles fulfill the law today? Verse 28-29 • “for he” – who is the he? A Jew. • The Bible teaches that true Israel is not just those who were born a Israelite but one who had faith and kept the law and believed in God – Rom 9:6-8, Luke 12:32, Matt 21:42-44, Matt 3:9-10, John 8:39-40, John 1:44-49, Duet 30:1-8. • “Whose praise is not of me, but of God” – Matt 6:1-7. • It’s clear that Paul is not speaking of the mystery of Christ here, he does not begin until Rom 3:21 as is clear by the phrase “But now” If you have any questions: My email - [email protected]
