Romans 7 is approached as one of the most personally honest chapters in Scripture. Paul's marriage-and-law illustration sets up the real point: in Christ we have died to self-atonement and are joined instead to what Christ has done for us. The message dwells on the war Paul describes— I do not understand what I do; what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do —and argues this is the experience of a believer, not an unbeliever. The law functions as both a map and a mirror, revealing how broken we are at the soul level. The conclusion refuses to leave the hearer in despair: we are not strugglers who must try harder but sinners who need a Savior , and rescue comes through a who , not a what —Jesus Christ.
