Rookie Pitcher vs. Fishing Buddy | Cleveland Guardians News

Parker Messick’s career-high 12 strikeouts were overshadowed by a brutal day against his All-Star Game buddy Riley Greene—yes, the same guy he planned a fishing trip with. Greene went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs, nearly single-handedly carrying the Tigers while Messick, who’d allowed two runs or fewer in 10 straight starts, fell short. Despite the loss, Messick’s season remains elite: 173 Ks (second-most by a rookie in Guardians history), a strong ERA, and a knack for shutting down lefties—until Greene. The Guardians’ playoff push now hinges on offense, but Messick’s resilience proves he’s a future star, even if his latest outing had a few fish-out-of-water moments.
