Room-Temp Brie & Spycraft on a Tuesday — Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

from Whine with Some Cheese · host Michael Seong

Our brie is room temperature. Avery’s wine tastes like despair. And on a Tuesday, on a Tuesday... we’re forced to endure Hamlet, Act 2 Scene 1, a scene that is basically: espionage, slander logistics, and one extremely unwell man with zero garment security.Polonius hands Reynaldo money, notes, and a full surveillance assignment: go to Paris, track down “Danskers,” and spy on Laertes by floating carefully calibrated rumors, nothing too scandalous, just enough “wanton, wild, and usual slips” to bait the truth out. It’s gossip as statecraft, and it’s exhausting. Then Ophelia arrives genuinely shaken: Hamlet burst into her room pale, trembling, hatless, and famously ungartered, held her wrist, stared at her face like a haunted fashion critic, and sighed like he was auditioning for the role of “Victim.” Polonius, naturally, decides this must be madness caused by love (because heaven forbid a man unravel for any reason that isn’t a woman), and immediately plans to take Ophelia’s private terror straight to the King. Privacy? Boundaries? Never heard of them.We whine about:Polonius outsourcing harassment and calling it “inquiry”Weaponized gossip, consent-free surveillance, and Reynaldo’s terrible jobHamlet’s tragic look: dirty stockings, no hat, maximum sighingOphelia being blamed, managed, and exploited for court politicsThe kingdom’s complete failure to regulate cheese temperature and basic decencyPour something chilled, cut the cheese, and remember: if you’re going to be manipulative, at least be organized. Preferably with a spreadsheet.
