Dateline April 8, 2023: Today, we sit down with Shanna Simpson, a current keeper at the Topeka Zoo who was the lead trainer of Lolita, also known as Toki, an orca who lives at Miami Seaquarium, where they have just announced their plans to release her into a sea pen and then eventually set her free. I have spent a lot of time researching this subject, and I am absolutely opposed to it. Shanna and I will walk you through the science behind why this move would be a death sentence for Toki, discuss former attempts at similar things, share on- and off-record conversations we have had with experts, and also discuss the unique things about Toki that make her an unbelievably bad candidate for release.
