Korte geschiedenis Lutheranen in Rotterdam De Rotterdamse lutheranen hebben een bewogen reis achter de rug. Het begon allemaal op het Colchoseiland, in een prachtig versierde kerk die helaas één groot minpunt had: de locatie. In de zomer zorgden de nabijgelegen leerlooierijen voor zo'n verstikkende stank, dat de gemeente al snel droomde van een frissere plek. Die droom werd in 1736 werkelijkheid aan de Wolfshoek. Daar verrees een iconische kerk die het trotse middelpunt van de Rotterdamse binnenstad werd. Het was een meesterwerk, vol koper. Maar op 14 mei 1940 sloeg het noodlot onverbiddelijk toe. Het verwoestende bombardement legde de kerk volledig in de as. Van de beroemde koperen adelaar-lessenaar werd later tussen het puin slechts één klein brokstukje van een vleugel teruggevonden, net als één donkergroen klein tegeltje dat in het puin is gevonden. Een aangrijpend symbool voor alles wat die dag verloren ging. Toch liet de gemeente zich niet kisten: uit de as herrees de Andreaskerk, waarmee een nieuw hoofdstuk begon in de veerkrachtige geschiedenis van luthers Rotterdam. Hans Bas Val is bedrijfseconoom en de laatste afgestuurde lutherse theoloog aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is meer dan 50 jaar kerkrentmeester geweest van onder meer Rotterdam, Zierikzee Gorkum en Zuid-Nederland. Hij was lid van de financiële en synodale commissie en hij was penningmeester en of voorzitter van de Nederlands Luthers Genootschap, de SLUB (spreek dat zo aan elkaar uit!), de Luther Stichting en Stichting Kerkelijke Kunst Nederland.
