In which the narrator impartially describes her husband as a handsome yet foolish and incapable man, whose mismanagement leads to the loss of their fortunes and eventual disappearance, leaving her in desperate circumstances with five children. She recounts her fruitless attempts to seek assistance from his relations, her mounting distress, and her reluctant reliance on tears and scant charity to bear the heavy burden of her plight.
