Royals Infield Dominates Defensive Rankings | Kansas City Royals News

The Kansas City Royals are dominating defensively this season, with four infielders ranked in the top three at their positions in the American League according to the advanced Society for American Baseball Research Defensive Index. Bobby Witt Jr. leads all shortstops, while Nick Loftin, Vinnie Pasquantino, and Michael Massey anchor their respective spots at third, first, and second base. This elite defensive unit, built on coaching discipline and player dedication, echoes the team’s proud history of Gold Glove winners like Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia — though Garcia’s eligibility is now off the table due to innings thresholds. While SDI data is a major factor in Gold Glove voting, manager and coach input still holds sway, as seen in Witt Jr.’s first award despite not being in the top three that year. With the season closing, the Royals remain laser-focused on maintaining their defensive excellence, hoping their hard work earns them well-deserved hardware.
