Recife & Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil. 'Mangue' is a mangrove swamp in Portuguese. It is one of the richest ecosystems on Mother Earth. Any music and culture coming from this area would be have to be as rich and as connected to the roots and the waters as is the mangrove. Pernambucan music today contains new and old seemlessly molded together; it is probably the most impressive music scene of which I've ever been a part. With Chico Science & company leading the way, these are some of the best sounds coming out of Recife & Olinda from the height of the so-called "mangue movement" in the mid-1990s up through the 2010s.
