Learn to end his life. What? No joke. Wait, long-term ended me.
That sounds terrible. Oh boy, what could this be about? I'll tell you. You know Emerson sounds like shit, right?
Hey, he's just jealous. He's totally jealous. Oh yeah. That's a real emotion.
Yeah. Yeah. Jealousy. Do you want to know about this song that's ruined my life?
It has ruined my life. It has not ruined my life, but it has left an indelible stamp on my life and my songwriting. I don't think it can be overstated. I think about this song so often.
Okay. Like every other day. Really? Yes.
I'm call me intrigued. And it's not like one of my favorite songs. It's usually not. Those are the ones that okay.
No, it's not. It's just I heard it at a young age in the 70s. I didn't know I didn't do any research about when this song was actually released. I was like, oh my gosh.
Why would you? I don't know. Maybe somebody can help me. Wait, are you gonna play, play me the song live, or is this already prerecorded or Emerson's gonna do it?
Oh, Emerson. Yeah. Was that already part of the intro and I've just completely spaced that? I don't know.
Did Emerson say he's gonna be playing the song? Yes. Okay. Yes.
Yes. He did. Sorry. My brain is mind too confusing.
Guys, I don't know what's going on. It's like heads or tails or I don't know. I'm turning 60 in 2026. Yes.
And I had an incredible realization at J Mask is a 60th birthday party the other day. Yeah. Good party. Yeah.
We had a fun time. We did and a lot of saw a lot of familiar faces and a lot of conversations. And then as the night progressed, I started to yell because the music got louder and louder, which always happens. Always happens when you got a DJ, especially a DJ that's like, you know, got really good taste in music.
They want to make it clearer and clearer as the night goes on how amazing their taste is. So it gets louder and louder. And perhaps I did. Yes.
I didn't notice that. Really? Well, at the end of the night, I was I was yelling and well, my ear thing was I was gonna say the man who just spent a loop problem because I didn't actually have a problem. It triggered my manures like nobody's business.
Oh. So yeah. But it inspired you for what you want to do for your 60th birthday party. Are you viewing this right now?
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm carrying a chair. Cats in the cradle. That's the song.
Just the other day. You came into the world and they gave you a wave but they were playing to catch. There's to pay. You learned a lot while I was away talking for what I knew it as a group.
He'd say, I'm gonna be like him. Dad, you know, I'm gonna be like you. What is this? What the fuck is up?
Oh my god. The same term, time is the other day. So thanks for the bow. Dad, come on.
Let's play. Can you teach me the thrower? I said, no, it's a bit. I got a lot of deep myself.
That's okay. You're about to wave but it's not like a thing. I said, I'm gonna be like you. Yeah, you know I'm gonna be like you.
Everybody. In the grand silver spoon. Little boy, blue in the middle. When you come home, Dad, I don't know where.
We'll get you together then. You know we'll have a good time then. Are you sure you want to let him do the entire song? Yes.
That's pretty good. It's a worm fuzzy. I'm from college just the other day. So much like a man, I just had the same.
And I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while? You should cuz in. And you said that this moment I really want dad as the ball of the car key.
So you're late. It cannot happen. A long since we're tired my son's moved away. I called her next day at the place that I'd like to see you.
If you don't mind. You said I'd love to. You got a bucket by in the town. Your job's a running kid at the floor but it's shouldn't be nice talking to you.
It's shouldn't be nice talking to you. I had a hundred pounds that occurred to me. And I'm just like me. My boys just like me.
The cats in the corner, the sea was cold. Little boy, blue in the man. When you come out home, so I don't know when. But we'll get you together then, Dad.
Well that was garbage. What? What? Look, why couldn't you just play it normal?
You have the means. You have me! Ugh, so little yet, so much at your disposal. Yeah, well, I feel like I love that song now.
Why don't you do the song nice for your sub stack? How's that for the 90s? For the ball of family general sub stack, why don't you do a nice version using your microphones and instead of... Maybe.
I've been playing the song a lot for the last three or four days. I found it difficult to even hear the words in the words are extremely important. Did you hear the words Adele? Yes.
You good? Yeah, of course. No, I heard it. You're telling me to shut up.
I did not. The man who controls me in every way is also to... What kind of game are you playing, Lube Island? I'm not.
This is strange. The balancing of your voices in your head. Okay. It's disturbing.
It's so disturbing as we go forward. Yeah. God. It's really driving.
It's really triggering. He's triggered. He's stuck. See, I'm helping.
Maybe I'll play a nice version of it. Sure. Actually, it sounded pretty good. I don't know.
I feel like I could have a beat to it. It has a cool warm fuzzy quality where I felt like I was sort of in this cool... I was sort of zoning out and I feel like I'm stoned right now. Nice.
I mean, the spaceman of someone's party. I'm like on a couch. Maybe my head's on someone's lap and they're really high in a good way. I don't know.
Emerson's time has come. He has a real stony vibe and I like it. Yeah. So that song, when I first heard it, it scared me.
It's so sad. It's like a guy saying that his whole relationship with his son was fucked. I feel like I've heard that song a million times because it's just part of the world. But I still have no idea what he's talking about.
What do you mean you don't know what he's talking about? I don't know. Can you tell me the lyrics? Yeah.
I love too. When a child arrived just the other day, he came into the world in the usual way. But there were planes to catch and bills to pay. He learned to walk while he was away.
Oh, okay. So he stopped. So a dad had a son, but he had to go work. He was working.
He was talking before I knew it. And as he grew, he'd say, I'm going to be just like you, dad. Okay. Okay.
Son turned 10 just the other day. Said, thanks for the ball, dad. Come on. Let's play.
Can you teach me to throw? I said not today. I've got a lot to do. And he said, that's okay.
He walked away but his smile never dimmed. He said, I'm going to be just like him. rap. Great question.

Jesus. So does... Wait, is that how it ends? Does he never spend time with his dad?
Does his dad never spend time with him? This is the killer. So the kid grows up. He goes to college.
Says, came home from college just the other day, so much like a man, I just had to say, son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while? He shook his head and he said with a smile. This is the kicker.
What I really want dad is to borrow the car keys. See you later. Can I have them, please? Right.
No time for each other. So they basically... I feel like when I heard this song, I feel like this song laid the groundwork for like Gen X parents like myself become helicopter parents. I think from an early age, I was like, you will never spend enough time with a child.
And it just really, really, really marked me. Because it was so profoundly sad. This guy Harry Chapin, I don't know much about him. He had another song called, he was a taxi driver.
It was just this sad song about being a taxi driver and his dreams disappear. It was just really, really strong. It's one of these singer-songwriters, 70s, soft rock songs that has this really underlying real, really sad message. There's a message.
There's two particular songs. I'm going to play the other one at some point, part two of songs that ruin my life. And see, the song is so powerful that when I started to write my own songs, I thought I had to be... You gotta tell the truth.
It's gotta be hardcore. And the final lines are intense, too. I've long since retired. My son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day. I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind. He said, I'd love to dad, but I can't find the time. My new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu, but it's sure nice talking to you, Dad.
This is killer. It's been sure nice talking to you, as if he just hung up. He's like, gotta go. He didn't even have time to talk to him then.
And then the narrator realizes that the boy is just like him. Like father likes on? Neglectful. I mean, it's just, and that song haunted me when it happened.
And then when I have kids, like it haunts me. And you know, I'm kinda like, I carry around a lot of guilt. Cause I travel a lot. And I'm really concerned with spending quality time with my kids.
You're kind of a Velcro-y parent, too. You kinda like to be attached. I do, but then I also like to do things. Yeah.
I like to get stuff done. And my boy, my boy, he doesn't know this song, but he'll say things to me. I'll be like, hey, Dad, wanna go out and play soccer? I'm like, I can't do it right now.
He'll be like, thanks, Dad. You know him, it's part of his humor. But when he sort of chides me for not spending those moments, I hear the song in my head. You know, and I just, this song really, really got to me.
And it still gets to me. And I really thought I needed to play it. And obviously, Emerson did. Thank you, Emerson.
Thank you so much. So it's kind of like regrets, huh? Yeah, heavy, heavy regrets. And then I, you know, sometimes with my songs, I'd have these realizations over the years.
Like, gee, I wish I was cooler, you know? Like when pavement came along, you know, I was just kind of tossed off stuff. And I'm like, damn, I couldn't do that. Because cats in the cradle taught me from an early age, like every song had to be like, put it all on the line.
Every song had to be heavy, you know, and just enveloping and heavy, which is not really what people want necessarily. And so- Well, all of your songs are enveloping and heavy. You have all sorts of playful stuff, like your early stuff with John Davis is incredibly funny and playful. Yeah, well, it's not what I'm primarily identified with.
I'm identified with- I'm saying you're diverse, though. Thank you. You're welcome. You are capable of, you know, having fun, too.
Thank you. But I definitely got the heavy vibe. I like to tell the heavy truth in a song. I like to take Suck the Air out of the room, you know?
I like that. I like the song becoming just, well, that's the birthday music. Because, you know, we're not done with November birthday shots. We're not done.
And I kind of like this. I kind of like it last- I know, let's keep it going November. Who's next for November? Who do I forget?
And then maybe we don't have to have a dedicated Happy Birthday episode. Why? Well, we can. I'm just saying, but why not- What do you mean for these ones that trail in?
They don't- What? No, I like to have a dedicated birthday one. This one's kind of cool. Okay.
This is from Bob Kovar. Oh, yes. Okay. I'm going to read it.
I sent a birthday request via sub-stack. I obviously didn't pay attention when you gave different instructions on the podcast. We do require you to send the request for a birthday shout-out to the Ron Presley's. Ron Presley's podcast and she made a- Any chance you could do a late November birthday shout-out for my daughter?
Oh, heck yeah. Yeah. It's cool because this is what he wrote. Hey guys, my daughter Audrey's birthday is November 14th.
She arranged for Luda Play at my retirement party a few years ago. But then sadly couldn't come because she got COVID. Aw. Thanks for honoring her if you can.
She's an actress, music fan and cat lover. And it's true. Audrey reached out to me during COVID, during that kind of- Yes, that's right. ...we were the last period of time.
Yeah. It was kind of maybe the latter days of it, but it was still weird. Because I remember the birthday party was in Pennsylvania. Okay.
Like sort of far eastern Pennsylvania. You did Kendrick so that one? I did not take Kendrick. You run alone to this one.
I went alone and I was like wildly paranoid the whole time. Mm. I was just like all like, yeah. It was all Bob Kovar's daughters are so cool.
They threw in me a party that did rule. They knew he loved and it's so JR. So they asked Looter to drive down in his car. For a couple of bucks in a hotel room.
That's all it takes. I'll take it. On March birthday, a baby bird. The daughter who asked Looter to play.
So that's what he did. But you got COVID. Couldn't be there on that special day. Bob's retirement party.
Pretty young to retire Bob. Yeah. Must be nice. Happy birthday.
Audrey. She did. She contacted me to play the party. Nice.
She sent me a really nice email. And she was I think she's in Brooklyn and seemed like a cool person. She is. Let's just say it.
Audrey, you're cool. So I drove down to a town that I forget the name of, but it was a nice town. Uh huh. North of Philadelphia.
Okay. Sort of on the New Jersey, Pennsylvania line, which is actually a, it's not a line. It's a river there. Visualize that way.
Really nice. Like old town. But I was wildly paranoid because it was during the pandemic and I was all like, if I saw a black pickup truck, I thought I was going to get shot. I thought I was going to get shot.
I was just so paranoid. You're not. Yeah. Just say no.
I'm not paranoid. You're not going to get shot. Oh, maybe. You never know.
It's good to keep your eye out. Um, so, uh, yeah. So I went down there and I played the party. The party was pretty funny because it was a lot of family and all of us coworkers and not a lot of people had any idea who I was.
Like, who's that guy in the corner? And I, and playing? What's he doing? Someone give him a guitar?
Who gave him a guitar? Yeah. Bob, who's this guy? I was like, what do you want to hear?
And they're like, you know, I'm like, you know, I'm like, I'm a little bit like a little bit. I'm like, what do you want to hear? And they're like, you know, I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah. I've seen a lot of Bob since then, which is nice.
Oh, wonderful. Shall I met Bob? I don't know. You've got the fun or BFGs.
What's going on there? Well, I think it's really important to note that on Sunday of this coming week. Sunday, yes. We are, it's going to be the last last last Sunday.
December, September, September. Pop up at our Barlow Family General Store, brick and mortars. Sunday, December, September. Oh my God.
The physical fucking building. Yeah, we did it last weekend and it was pretty cool. It was fun. We had a couple of fans game and chat at the end.
It was kind of sweet. Yeah. And where I'm, oh God. Who's beeping you right now?
We're in the middle of our podcast. I didn't do for this podcast. Was any kind of, any kind of meaningful research on cats in the cradle by Harry Chapin. Oh, well, wait.
So let's, so. And shutting up my fucking phone. You're goddamn phone. Yeah.
So this Sunday, December, 24th, September. 21st from 11 to 4, 44 Chapman Street, Greenfield, Massachusetts, zip code 01301. That's the location of, it's really my, my work studio, but we opened up for a pop up last weekend and this Sunday and this will be like last year. And I will do it again in February for like a Valentine's one, but not, not of January.
So this is kind of like a big chance. If you're around and you're like, you know what? Get out of town for the weekend and get to the last minute. Get away out of town.
Get away out of town and come away out of Greenfield off 91, 91 Interstate, 1991. You got to tell, yeah, you got to tell people, you got to tell your, your, your people too. And then they can come and then, um, and our friend Alexis, our friend Alexis is, uh, of works on paper. It's works on paper.
It's really cool stuff. Like kind of funny fanzines, but really amazing photo books. Amazing photo books. She does things really cool.
She refurbishes old pens. I love this. She did. She does.
Like takes really old, like pens from the like 60s and 70s. I know. You know, these really sturdy like ballpoint pens, but she puts new guts inside of them so we can write it. It's, it's so cool.
It's so cool. She has beautiful stationery. She's offering. So it's like she's doing it with us.
And I tell you, Adele can sell, Adele at a store is perfect. I'm a retail. Chech, bitch. You know, I really am.
It's my history. It's what I've always done. Yeah, you're really, really good at it. And, uh, thank you.
We do have fun stuff. I mean, we're going to have, you know, um, we, some people got like for loose stuff. We got some leith, some CDs. Grasshopper came.
That was amazing. Our friend Grasshopper. And he bought a vinyl. It's with the day after Jay's birthday party.
So we got a little bit of, yeah. Yeah. It was fun. A couple of people who came up the next day to our, to our store.
That was super cool. Sold some sweaters, some hats, some crocheted ornaments. Um, you know what I'm also selling other stuff by other brands that I like and I sold some of those like some kids, well, socks and some tea towels and some, some people bought some needle felting kits. And we're working this a little bit because it is a really, I mean, if you need gifts.
It's really, gotta say it's actually pretty cute. And they're good gifts. Like if you're, if you're like me and you have no fucking idea what to get people, there's a lot of things that you're like, oh, that's, you know, I've made it easy for you. I put together a selection of good stuff.
I did. You did. You did a really good job. Oh, thanks, hon.
Really, really good job. Sunday, December 21st. Thank you. Well, I appreciate that.
I mean, it's a lot and it's been really fun, you know, oh, and we're going to have Emerson. We're going to have some Emerson's for sale this weekend. And brothers and sisters are for sale. We're going to have like two boomboxes and two portable CD players as well for sale and five Emerson's.
Okay. Thank you very much for. Perfect timing. I'm going to need to play a cats cradle.
Did a good job, Emerson. I don't know. I'm kind of, I can understand. He's cozy.
Emerson, I'm signing off for this, uh, this episode of round questions. And remember here, I'll be there. He's going to be there. He's going to be there.
Yes. I'm going to be in Massachusetts on Sunday. Yay. Thank you.
