Here's a show that we recommend. When you picture the First World War, you probably think of Barb Wire, Artillery Fire, and Mud. What you probably don't think of? Drag shows.
Love letters pass between those in uniform. Queer lives hiding in plain sight. In our new series, we're looking at the stories that didn't make it into the official record. Because they were too tender, too queer, or too dangerous to preserve.
From Canadian soldiers performing in drag at the front. To forbidden love in the trenches. To nurses whose lifelong relationship was reduced to friendship. History looked away, but we don't.

Acast.com. Ciao and welcome to Tiny Tunes Tuesday, the musical subsidiary of Veron Pressions podcast. Today, Luke continues his ruin series. He continues his ruin series.
With another song that ruined his songwriting and made him uncool forever. Ruin. What? That's a big statement.
It's a little dramatic. I was really hoping that would make it in there. I'm so bummed that I missed doing a really good Christmas as ruin during the Christmas season. Yeah.
Now it's not the Christmas season anymore. It's this true. It's over as of today. Today, Christmas season is gone.
Okay. The child is at school. First day back at school after the winter break. First day I could reasonably email people that I'd been expecting answers from.
Reasonably email them and expect a response. It's just a wasteland between December 20th. And whatever the first, I mean, and that we had that Friday the other day that was, it was January 2nd, but it wasn't really like a real day. Because it was between Thursday and Saturday.
So it was between the holiday and the Saturday. It's like a fake work day. Yeah. A little confusing.
Yeah. I'm ready for this time to be kind of back. And yeah, I'm ready to put Christmas to bed too. I still have to put away all the ornaments and decorations, but that's going to happen like tonight or tomorrow.
Yeah. Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's put that stuff back in a box and put it up in the goddamn attic.
Yeah. It's got to go back up with the bats. It's a little dramatic that I say ruined. I was ruined by a hit song.
This is a hit song from 1968. Yeah. You weren't ruined. You were influenced?
I was influenced. This song was, it was a very, it was ubiquitous for most of the early 70s. Does that mean it was everywhere? It was everywhere.
Uh-huh. See, I feel like you've used it now enough that I'm starting to learn that word. Yeah. And when I was first learning guitar, it's one of the first songs that I learned.
Really? And this was actually later on in the 70s. It kind of became a standard standard. Oh.
Yeah. Why are you going to tell me the name of the song? No. Not yet.
Not yet. Okay. Yeah. I got a little ahead of myself, to be honest.
Um, anyway, Christmas is ruined. Christmas is ruined. ruined. I know.
You didn't say we didn't even do a Kittens in the Christmas Tree, the song. Like we, I don't even remember what happened. Oh, we talked about how poor the gift giving was, but we're working on that, guys. We didn't put all of our Christmas-themed CDs into the multi-CD player.
No, this is, this was not the year. We didn't pull out our considerable sack of Christmas, funny Christmas alpies. We didn't pull that out this year. No.
I know. We managed to get the Christmas tree up and, uh, Kittens did not go into the Christmas tree. Yeah. Kittens now cats.
They are now officially. Yeah. Over a year old. It's true.
They did not climb a Christmas tree. That much. Not much. Yeah.
Yeah. Not in a way where we had to like, shift everything. I mean, it, you know, song commencing in four notes. That tiny tunes, guys.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Those other games people play now. Every, every day now.
Never mean what they say now. Never say what they mean. All they want to be the hour. Every hour.
To cut up a thousand hours. And the back of a definitely Zeboo. Lo non-da. Ohm, No, I'm not a bad a bit.
Yo, na na na. Get back on humanity. Oh, you don't give us a fuck. I'm talking about you So that's my mediocre cover of the games people play who did that song It was Joe South Joe South he released that in August 1968 I can't say that I know that I know that song.
I don't know that I do it's sort of familiarish But I don't know the impact that it had at that time which was considerable It won a Grammy for the best song of the year in 1970 Wow two years after came out Mm-hmm. It won Grammy for the best contemporary song in 1970 It went to number four on the Irish charts only the number 12 in the United States. No, uh-huh. He was from the south actually was from Georgia No, I didn't do like where he was born.
He died in Georgia. Okay, yeah, the age of 72 Yeah, really kind of a cool figure and he wrote some really great songs really. Yeah, he wrote Rose Garden I beg your pardon. I never promised you a rose garden I like that one the sunshine great song.
He wrote that he wrote hush deep purple. He was like, oh, yeah I like that one. Yeah, he wrote some really good songs But this was his he did a few solo records and that was this was his big hit. I mean like I said, it's sort of like Hi, how can I tell you still haven't ultra mega 3 megadon in stock and just row 800 kilometers You found 800 kilometers is a long way.
Yeah, luckily my key carnival hybrid gets up to 1000 kilometers to a tank I love to get out for long drives with up to eight passengers all his besties can come along I do anything for my little man doesn't deserve you you said it I've had a bit here this summer with range of up to 1000 kilometers in the key accountable hybrid Great decent finance office at Kia. That's so you were teaching it Yeah, I mean it was like this kind of really do it did It was a really kind of almost anxiety producing song. Well, the lyrics.
I mean they're letting you know like um the world is fucked They're letting you know that it's like really, you know It's and I think that's what that's what's that that is what ruined me because it was really one of the first songs that I learned on guitar And then really considered the lyrics, you know, wow music is heavy. It's gotta be heavy You gotta be telling the truth I talked about this when I played cats in the crate all the other day. Yeah There is a the thing he's saying there like what is it? Um the games people play right like you know there is a What's the word I'm thinking I was like a jaded quality to that weary weary weary man the times are changing and he's weary It's 1968.
Yeah, I mean I'm sorry. It's a year after the summer of love Everything started to get pretty grim after 1960 Vietnam You know and it was sort of the soundtrack of the tumultuous period, but it really registered to me I'm like, oh This is it. You know, you gotta be heavy like songs have to be heavy. It's a terrible that I like the fact that he took such a heavy subject And he at least made it catchy I really appreciate that you couldn't really tell it was catchy from that version of the song.
I could I thought it was catchy Did you yeah, I played it for a while. I played it I played it a lot there for a few days kind of leading up to Christmas I think I kind of associate it with like I feel like I was in kind of a Christmas depression. Well, you know you were I feel like Yeah, I felt um I felt down and then I was playing this song over and over again and You know, it's one of the song is definitely one of those well the more things change the more they say the same Hey, I feel like you know, it's interesting is the trip to Wisconsin actually sort of shook your depression I mean that was one of the hardest things I've ever done and yet it kind of changed you like you came back and you're not As like self sort of like I'm down in the dumps, you know, and this dark energy is gone Yeah, definitely pull me out of myself visiting your mom and your family in Wisconsin definitely. Yeah, it made me, you know You gotta think about other people You just gotta um, you know, it's well and when someone you love Who is so?
You know a part of your life. It's not some abstract thing that you hear about or think about like oh you should feel grateful because you know People are in this situation. That's really bad but it's like someone who's directly involved in your life a part of your life and You know when you see The depths of what they're going through It yeah, I can really be the perspective shift that you need sometimes. Yeah, that's definitely the case I do feel Things are heavy.
Mm-hmm. Obviously, but um, I do personally feel like I need I need to be lighter Mm-hmm. That's what I need to do. Mm-hmm.
I need to be lighter So you look like you're poised to play are you? No, I was like what are you gonna play right there? I don't know. Oh, it's all yeah life I should have just played it live.
I liked that. It actually reminded me of like a old-school kind of podcasty thing Yeah, I mean it was Emerson. Oh, was it Emerson? It was Emerson With condenser microphone is currently available from the bottle of family gendel store the audio Electronic wing of the bottle of family gendel store Bfgs with all of your no-fi needs you too can be low-fi like Emerson combined with My standard studio set up like it was like a combination of cassette and alive the live recording of the same performance Did you figure out how to use your new tape player thing?
Nope? Okay? Okay, I required a really beautiful vintage Sony portable cassette player not a handheld but like Rectangle they're the kinds that the kind that I recorded online. I was a kid the kind that people had laying around the house back then And that's where I documented my first Song ideas and even like little skits that I would do with my cousin and You know just pretending to be on TV broadcasting.
Oh, yeah TV announcer Mm-hmm was we kind of take decks I played with hmm, but uh games people play was on Emerson. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. A little combination of people play Yeah, man, how does that song land with you now?
I uh, I don't like it as much. Yeah, no, no, it's a little strident Strident what's that mean again? Just kind of strong and I'm dynamic and on that. That's a I would say combo strong and dynamic Protest songs can be that way concludes.
