In this episode, we explore Rumi’s Masnavi narrative of the exiled servant whose longing for his king isa metaphor for the soul’s yearning for the Divine Beloved. A loyal servant of the king of Bukhara is falsely accused and forced into exile. For ten years, he wanders through deserts and mountains, burning with longing. At last, unable to endure separation, he resolves to return—though it may cost him his life. His friends warn him: the king may imprison or execute him. But he insists on going back: "Better be prisoned in love than free in exile." Finally, advisor comes to him warning him of the grave danger that awaits him. The servant replies: ...
