A miller boasts his daughter can spin straw into gold, leading the king to force her to perform the impossible task. A little man appears and spins the straw into gold in exchange for her necklace, ring and eventually her firstborn child when she becomes queen. When the time comes, the queen is distraught, and the little man allows her three days to guess his name, promising to relinquish the child if she succeeds. After much searching, the queen's messenger overhears the little man singing his name, Rumpelstiltskin.
