Rutgers Stunned by UMass in Upset | Rutgers Scarlet News

Rutgers’ season opener turned into a nightmare as they lost at home to UMass 37-21 — a team coming off a 16-game losing streak and their first win against a Power Four school since 1978. Dylan Lonergan threw three picks, and the defense surrendered 200 rushing yards. UMass’s QB William Watson III dazzled with 19-of-22 passing for 197 yards and 3 TDs. Rutgers paid UMass $1.55 million for this game — making the loss sting even more. The upset has already shifted odds, boosting Penn State’s win probability over Rutgers from 87.7% to 94.2%. Meanwhile, other Big Ten teams like Illinois and Minnesota dominated their opponents. College football’s early chaos is here — and it’s wild.
