RWR Power Pro Wrestling Podcast Ep. 19 (8/22/98) The Owner, Founder, & Big Daddy!

On Episode #19 of the Retro Wrestling Re-View Power Pro Wrestling Podcast, The RWR Power Pro Podcast Gang brace themselves for another Saturday morning trip through 1998 Memphis Power Pro Wrestling and this week, the boys are coming off the Randy Hales head shaving circus from Episode #18. Randy may have lost his hair, but he definitely hasn’t lost his camera time, because “the Randy Hales Show starring Randy Hales” picks up where we left off last week.The episode opens with plenty of pre-show chaos: tape preservation talk, World Class master tapes, Continental footage, Cassette Wrestling News tapes, Producer Smokey’s t-shirt situation, Production Assistant Benny trying to move the show along, and the crew somehow making it 13 minutes before actually watching Power Pro. It’s almost like they were avoiding it…….The centerpiece is the Stacey/Brandon Baxter/Randy Hales/Jerry Lawler drama. Randy comes out of the head shaving humiliation trying to expose Stacey’s past, Brandon Baxter gets pulled into it in the trashiest most “Jerry Springer” way possible, Billy Joe Travis joins the scene along with “bodyguards” in crappy Halloween Scream masks, and before long, the whole thing spills into a studio wide ambulance angle. It’s messy, inappropriate, ridiculous, and about as “Memphis TV” as it gets.Episode #19 is not exactly clean television. The ever multiplying "bodyguards” seem to be almost played for comedy with the stupid Scream masks and total ineptitude, Corey Maclin standing against the back wall with his hands in his pockets during EVERY promo almost feels like more of a troll than the a**hole in the actual troll mask who just doesn’t seem to go away, and Randy Hales is somehow still everywhere, all the time.Granted it’s not the Memphis Wrestling we grew up on….or the Memphis Wrestling we may have wanted, but in the late nineties days of the Monday Night Wars and the Jerry Springer Show, this is what “wrestling” became….for a few years at least.
