S 931: The Polypharmacy Crisis: Why 1 in 4 American Adults Take 5 or More Medications
from Sam Miller Science · host Sam Miller
Roughly a quarter of American adults are taking five or more prescription medications at the same time, and that number climbs steeply past age 40. It shows up in national survey data, in Medicare data, and in European population studies, so it's a feature of the Western medical world, not a quirk of one system. Health systems have written entire national guidance documents whose only job is managing the resulting polypharmacy, which is the clearest sign that this is the standard rather than the exception. The most talked about murder trial of the year has put a public face on what polypharmacy looks like at its most extreme, but the everyday version of this story is playing out in millions of primary care offices, OB follow-ups, and more. Inside today's episode, I break down the polypharmacy conversation, walking through why national health system have all written formal frameworks for managing the medication burden, why that alone tells you this is the standard rather than the exception, and how the cascade of prescriptions tends to unfold.---------- My Live Program for Coaches: The Functional Nutrition and Metabolism Specialization www.metabolismschool.com---------- [Free] Metabolism School 101: The Video Serieshttp://www.metabolismschool.com/metabolism-101----------Subscribe to My Youtube Channel: https://youtube.com/@sammillerscience?si=s1jcR6Im4GDHbw_1----------Grab a Copy of My New Book - Metabolism Made Simple---------- Stay Connected: Instagram: @sammillerscienceYoutube: SamMillerScience Facebook: The Nutrition Coaching Collaborative CommunityTikTok: @sammillerscience----------“This Podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed.
