S” is for South Carolina Commission on Higher Education

from South Carolina from A to Z · host Walter Edgar

“S” is for South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE) was created by the General Assembly in 1967. It replaced the Advisory Council on Higher Education, which had been created in 1962. The Commission serves as a statewide higher education coordinating board for South Carolina's thirty-three public institutions of higher learning. The CHE conducts more than seventy activities across four broad lines of effort: academic oversight and licensing; scholarships and financial aid; college opportunity; and data, research and accountability. In addition to partnering with institutions to deliver an effective statewide higher education system, the Commission on Higher Education acts both as an oversight entity on behalf of the General Assembly, and an advocate for the citizens of South Carolina as they seek opportunities to improve their lives, and those of their families, through higher education
