It seemed like such a foregone conclusion that he would win that most newspapers jumped the gun in reporting a Tilden victory. So how did things go wrong? How did Rutherford B. Hayes wind up winning the 1876 Presidential Election? Why did the newly founded state of Colorado matter so much?
