Antarctica is a vast ice covered land at the South Pole. It is the fifth largest of the seven continents and is the coldest place on Earth. In summer the temperature never goes above -20° Fahrenheit or -29° Celcius. Almost all of Antarctica is covered by a very thick layer of ice with an average depth of 6,500 feet or 2,000 meters. In December and January the sun never sets in the Antarctic. Different times during the day, it shows how the sun moves but does not set. There are 24 hours of daylight.
