S1 Ep 47 - The Camel Milk Co.

from Australian Farmers: Telling Our Story · host Angie Asimus

Have you ever tasted camel milk or used camel beauty products? It's a relatively new industry in Australia. Leading the way in bringing this range to the masses is husband and wife Megan and Chris Williams. Having met on holiday in the outback, the couple fell in love with each other and with wild camels. One thing lead to another, and The Camel Milk Co was born. It was the first officially licensed Camel Dairy in the state. It started with three camels – now they're up to about 500 as Australia and the world falls in love with this fascinating product. To learn more, company founder Megan is today's guest. We discuss:   Megan's favourite place on the camel farm is the nature reserve. Megan and now husband Chris met on an outback holiday and the moment they were captivated by wild camels. Making the switch from dairy farming to camel farming and why Megan and Chris started The Camel Milk Co. The learning curves as Megan has had to adjust to working with wild camels opposed to cows. The trust building required to milk camels and, how their lactation differs from dairy cows. Troubleshooting the camel dairy farming process and building a custom milking station. Everything you could want to know about camels' milk, from the health benefits to the taste. Applying to register camel milk here in Australia and the pasteurising process. Packing and distributing their milk and its availability around the country and overseas. Creating new products as Megan launches their own beauty product range. A cow can produce 20-40 litires of milk a day, whereas a camel averages only five, leading to the price difference. Megan shares some of her best camel facts. Her favourite thing about life on the land and working with camels. The most unexpected thing to happen running the dairy. Most common misconception about what Megan does. The ultimate dream for the future of The Camel Milk Co.   We hope to see you back on the road soon, to learn more about how Australia grows on the next episode of Australian Farmers with Angie Asimus.   Links: Angie Asimus Connect with @angieasimus on Instagram Partnered with Australian Farmers Follow @australianfarmers On Instagram The Camel Milk Co.
