S1 Ep18: The Fine Line between being an Ally and Stealing the Mic. Racism, Education & Self Forgiveness

from Conversations with Nova Reid · host Nova Reid

You can pre-order my new book, The Good Ally, in Waterstones and Amazon now.In this episode I talk to Natalie an Educational Psychologist, mum of two and one of my anti-racism students. Natalie and I had an incredibly raw and vulnerable conversation about her anti-racism journey and she shares her experience of being in an interracial relationship with two mixed heritage children while also working in education. Natalie grew up in an almost exclusively white area and while she felt innately uncomfortable with the covert and sometimes overt racism she observed; she talks about how she didn't have the language to speak up until she grew up. This is a really truthful conversation about how to become an ally beyond performative action. The boundary between speaking up and passing on the mic, tackling systemic racism in education and the joy of becoming anti-racist. Natalie generously opens up about her journey, leaning into the messiness of anti racist work and imploring her fellow white folk to do the same. In the episode we also discuss:- Natalie's journey into her anti-racist work & the importance of intentionality- White privilege and how that can be weaponised against black and brown people.- Racism and unconscious bias in education- Natalie's thoughts on Christianity and dismantling systems of oppressionReferenced in the episode:- Robin DiAngelo: White Fragility - Reni Eddo-Lodge: Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race- Layla F Saad: Me and White Supremacy- My discussion with Selina Barker in Episode 3 NB: All views are Natalie's own and not that of her employer. You can connect with me over at @novareidofficial(https://www.instagram.com/novareidofficial/) and atwww.novareid.comIf you are ready to do the inner work and learn to be actively anti racist please visit my website for further details about my anti racism online course:  https://novareid.com/services/anti-racism-white-privilege-course/Don't forget if you learn something and these add value you can join my brand new podcast community over on Patreon to support this work and get access to exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/novareid.If this podcast resonates with you, please leave a review
