S1 Ep7: Bryan Comer, Senior Researcher, ICCT

The 75th meeting of the International Maritime Organisation’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) rolled on this week in the crosshairs of a wary shipping sector. The decisions made this week in developing a regulatory pathway away from fossil-based fuels and energy sources for shipping will have key implications for an industry already in turmoil, as to what alternative fuel options and technologies are available to them in this transition.Bryan Comer, senior researcher within the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), joins us for this week’s podcast to discuss these options and technologies in more depth, as well as the other global trends sending ripples across the shipping industry.Before joining the ICCT, Bryan spent more than five years as an independent environmental policy analyst for clients including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of Energy and Environmental Research Associates.During this time, Bryan developed expertise in conducting marine and port emissions inventories and in modeling the economic, environmental, and energy use tradeoffs of freight transportation policies. Bryan holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, as well as an M.S. and B.S. in Public Policy from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
