We often don't make change in our lives until we reach a point of crisis. I've been guilty of this as well. Intellectually we only really get it when we're staring death in the face or we're facing short term deep pain. But by then it's too late... we need to get ahead of it. And everyday life is deceptive, it allows us to believe our time is limitless on some level, but obviously it's not.
