S1E10 - Moving Because You Love Yourself: Reframing Exercise as Pleasure, Not Punishment
from The Tending Hour · host with Mary Jane
Somewhere between childhood and now, movement got complicated. It became the price you pay for eating what you ate. The discipline that separates people who have their act together from those who don't. The thing you should be doing more of, better than you are, with more willpower than you seem to have. In Episode 10 of The Tending Hour, Mary Jane dismantles that story completely and offers something in its place that research actually supports: moving because you love yourself works better than moving because you hate your body. In every measurable way. Drawing on somatic psychology, exercise motivation research, and the extraordinary work of Bessel van der Kolk on the body and stored experience, this episode reframes movement as expression, release, and one of the most joyful forms of embodiment available to us. It includes the Movement Discovery: a practice of finding the one form of movement your body has been asking for that you haven't yet given yourself permission to pursue. This one is joyful. And it might be exactly the permission you needed. This week's practice is the Movement Discovery. It begins with the most important movement question you will ever ask yourself: What kind of movement have I been avoiding — not because I don't want it, but because I didn't feel like I deserved to enjoy it? Here is how the practice works: • Choose one form of movement that you have been wanting to do, or remembering with longing, or quietly curious about that you have not given yourself permission to pursue. Not the one you think you should be doing. The one your body has been asking for.• Do it once this week. Not as a commitment or a new routine. Just as an experiment in listening to what your body loves.• Notice how it feels. Not whether it is hard enough or long enough or burns enough. How does it feel? What does your body say? What quality of aliveness does it bring? That noticing — that honest, curious, non-judgmental conversation with your own body about what it loves — is the beginning of a movement practice that will actually last. Because it is built not on willpower or obligation. It is built on love. Movement is one of the themes explored across multiple weeks in Phase 3 — Embody — of the Trilateral Transformation Program. In the program, we do not offer a fitness plan. We offer something far more useful: a complete reimagining of your relationship with your own body in motion. We look at the specific history you carry around movement, work with the workbook to find the forms of movement that belong to your body, and practice — across multiple weeks, from multiple angles — what it feels like to move from love rather than from lack. If today opened something — if you felt even a flicker of that childhood memory, that felt sense of moving purely for joy — there is so much more of that available in the program.
