S1E14: God Is Not Your Emotional Support Animal
from The Upside-Down Kingdom · host Seth Tillotson | Bondservant of Christ Jesus
Core Mission: The Holy Spirit is a divine Agent—not an emotional support animal. He comforts the broken AND convicts the self-deceived. Domesticating the Spirit into predictable emotional experiences is the final systemic idol.Theological Foundation:1. John 16:7-11 — Spirit's First Function is Conviction- "When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment"- Spirit's first named function toward the world = conviction—not comfort, not empowerment, not emotional experience- Conviction = exposing what's wrong- Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit = lied to God- Spirit is not force, not energy, not atmosphere—He is Person of the Trinity who detects deception and acts on it3. Galatians 5:22-23 — Fruit ≠ Feelings- "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace..."- Fruit = character produced over time, not emotional experience of worship set- Test Spirit's presence by fruit (long-term transformation), not feelings (short-term peaks)4. Emotional Manipulation vs. Genuine Presence- Hype culture teaches: evaluate God's nearness by emotional intensity- Result: God "shows up" when music is loud and lights are dim- He "doesn't show up" in ordinary and uncomfortable- Makes production team more important than Paraclete5. The Spirit's Full Portfolio- Comforter (John 14:16)- Teacher (John 14:26)- Truth-revealer (John 16:13)- Convicter (John 16:8)- Gift-giver (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)- Fruit-producer (Galatians 5:22-23)- Intercessor (Romans 8:26-27)- Sanctifier (2 Thessalonians 2:13)- Reducing Him to emotional experience = theological amputationClosing Provocation: "When's the last time the Holy Spirit convicted you instead of made you feel good?"
