It’s an episode of firsts! We examine the first time the holodeck ever appears in a CANON episode of Star Trek, in the series premiere of The Next Generation, while also watching the first time a version of the holodeck appears in The Animated Series, where it’s called “The Rec Room.” We discuss holodeck bug reports, “Chekhov’s rock,” the undercelebrated genius of a “Kirk is a Jerk” shirt, and go over the history of the holodeck as a concept and execution. The Enterprise’s least important officers meet for the first time in Ten Forward and try to figure out whether to suck up to Picard or Riker, how to get a permission slip to go down to Farpoint Station, and how many Enterprises there are during a saucer separation.
