S1E9 - The Relationships That Restore You: Why Connection Belongs in Your Wellness Plan
from The Tending Hour · host with Mary Jane
The inner work was never separate from the relational work. It was always in service of it. In this Phase 3 opener of The Tending Hour, Mary Jane reveals the most expansive reframe of the series: every act of self-trust built in Phase 1, every condition for safety created in Phase 2, every belief examined and released — all of it has been relationship preparation. It has been making you more available to the people and connections in your life than you have ever been before. Drawing on the landmark research of John Cacioppo on loneliness and health, Polyvagal Theory's social engagement system, and Brené Brown's work on vulnerability and belonging, this episode makes the case that connection is not the reward for being well. It is one of the primary ways we become well. This episode includes the Connection Audit: a practice of honest, compassionate seeing that helps you understand which relationships in your life restore you and which ones ask you to make yourself smaller than you are. This week's practice is the Connection Audit: an act of honest, compassionate seeing. Find a quiet moment and bring to mind the significant connections in your life right now. For each one, ask three questions: • After spending time with this person or in this community, do I generally feel more like myself, or less? More energized, or more depleted? This is not about whether the relationship is easy or difficult. It is about the net effect on your sense of self.• Am I able to be honest in this connection? Is there room for my real experience — what I actually think, feel, and need? Or do I find myself editing, performing, or shrinking to fit what is expected?• What does this connection ask of me? And is what it asks something I can give from genuine willingness — or from fear, obligation, or the old belief that my worth depends on what I provide to others? You do not have to do anything dramatic with what you discover. You do not have to end relationships or make declarations. You simply have to see clearly. And then, equally important, notice the connections that restore you. Let yourself feel grateful for them. Tend to those with the same intentionality you have been bringing to every other dimension of this work. Connection is one of the themes explored across multiple weeks in Phase 3 — Embody — of the Trilateral Transformation Program. In the program, we look at the specific relational patterns that have shaped your world, practice the courage of showing up as yourself in the relationships that matter most, and explore what genuine community looks and feels like, and how to find or build it. The workbook for this phase asks the questions that help you take what you are discovering here and make it real in your actual relational life. If today opened something, if you felt the particular spaciousness of Phase 3 beginning, the program is the deeper container for this work. Enjoyed this episode?
