Jean-Michel was born in Brooklyn on December 22, 1960 to Gerard and Matilde Basquiat as one of three first generation children of a Haitian immigrant and Puerto-Rican mother – a legacy of strong, passionate, grounded, pioneers, entrepreneurs, and creative people. The family was focused on nurtured creativity, culture, music, and connection to Brooklyn, where they lived.
