S2 E158: When Does “Protecting People” Become Sowing Discord?

What happens when “protecting people” becomes the justification for sowing discord?Sometimes division doesn't begin with a public accusation. It starts quietly—with one conversation, one warning, one carefully planted suggestion. Someone tells their version of a conflict to another person, then another, and eventually people who were never involved are carrying opinions and judgments about someone they may never have spoken to themselves.In S2 E158 of Unpolished but Called, we're looking at what Scripture says about sowing discord, slander, damaging someone's reputation, recruiting others into our conflicts, and using biblical-sounding motives to justify unbiblical methods.We walk through Proverbs 6 and its warning about those who sow discord among brethren, the picture of feeding a fire in Proverbs 26, and Absalom's calculated campaign to steal the hearts of Israel through conversations that slowly shaped how people viewed David.But there's another side we need to consider: What happens when someone tries to recruit us into their conflict? Do we immediately accept the first version we hear? Do we allow another person's story to determine how we treat someone? Do we become another link in the chain—or are we willing to ask, Why are you telling me this?And there's an important distinction: protecting someone who is genuinely in danger, reporting serious wrongdoing, seeking appropriate counsel, or involving legitimate authority is not the same thing as sowing discord. Biblical accountability seeks truth and resolution. Sowing discord seeks division.Before pointing at someone else, though, this episode turns the question back on all of us.Have we ever carried wood to a fire God wanted extinguished?Because a biblical goal does not justify an unbiblical method.
