S2 E159: Is God Asking You to Help or Are You Trying to Control the Outcome?

When someone you love is struggling, making a bad decision, or facing a problem you know how to solve, helping can feel like the obvious thing to do.But how do we know when God is asking us to step in—and when we're trying to take responsibility for something that was never ours to carry?In S2 E159 of Unpolished but Called, we're talking about the difference between helping someone and trying to control their outcome.Galatians tells us to bear one another's burdens, but only a few verses later says that every person must bear his own burden. Both are true. There are burdens we're called to help carry, and there are responsibilities that belong to someone else. The difficult part is discerning the difference.We look at the Good Samaritan, whose compassion required him to step in, and Moses, who had to learn that personally handling every problem wasn't good for him—or for the people depending on him. Sometimes helping is exactly what love requires. Other times, constantly becoming the solution can keep someone from learning, growing and carrying responsibilities for themselves.And then comes the uncomfortable question:Is God asking me to help—or am I uncomfortable watching something remain unfixed?Sometimes genuine compassion can become a need to control the outcome. We want someone to listen to our advice, make the decision we think is right, avoid the consequences we can see coming, or simply make the problem disappear. But loving someone doesn't give us control over their choices.Paul planted. Apollos watered. God gave the increase.We can speak truth, pray, encourage, apologize, forgive, love and point people toward Christ—but there are things only God can do. Sometimes our responsibility ends before we get to see the outcome.And this isn't only an episode for the fixers.
