Sam Gutwein started playing drums at the impressionable age of 10 when he could finally reach the pedals properly on his father’s kit. Initially starting out on piano, his passion for playing the drums has been a constant throughout his life and it is undoubtedly the power of the instrument and the ability to command crowd and band mate attention that keeps the passion burning. Having played in primary and high school bands, Sam takes inspiration from a wide variety of styles. Throughout high school, metal drumming was a huge source of inspiration, and since joining his first working band ‘Wolf & Chain’, his love for metal, punk, and emo music has blossomed. Wolf & Chain have been making a name for themselves as energetic and powerful performers. Having completed their first tour in early 2021 with Sydney’s ‘Clay J Gladstone’ and Melbourne’s ‘Drastic Park’. Their debut EP ‘An Honest Mistake’ was released in June 2020, and their second EP Amor Mortal was released on October 29, 2021. Sam met his Wolf & Chain band members Jack Cumes (vocals) and Joe Butcher (guitar) at the University of Adelaide when he was studying sound engineering, and soon after Harry Charles-Britton joined on bass guitar with Sam Gutwein on drums. Finally, Luke O'Dwyer joined as second guitarist and with that the band was fully formed. Wolf & Chain have been performing at Adelaide live music venues since 2017 doing the rounds of the local circuit. 2020 had seen the band grow significantly with the release of debut EP “An Honest Mistake” in June, with several tracks garnering radio play on triple j short.fast.loud, The Faction and Triple M Hard & Heavy among others. The EP was received to glowing reviews from Don't Bore Us, Wall of Sound, Punktastic and many others. Sam is a BIG SOUND PERCUSSION drumstick artist, and the owner and specialist mixing engineer at LoudToys Studio. Sam is a graduate from the University of Adelaide (Diploma of Audio Engineering.) Like his father Willi Gutwein, he prefers to play drums in bands, however, he also studied piano, voice, and guitar. Sam’s talents are incredibly diverse having scored music for musicals, to recording and mixing his passion of modern metal, punk/pop, emo music.
