S2 EP.7 - Demystifying Quantum Computing

In this episode of the EmpowerTech Podcast, host Iyari Cevallos sits down with William Gooderson, a high-performance coach and former Chief of Staff at Silicon Quantum Computing in Sydney. Will helps us cut through the noise around quantum computing and understand what is real, what is hype, and what leaders should be paying attention to. We explore the basics of quantum computing, how it differs from classical computing, and why concepts like superposition matter. Will also explains the current race to build a fully functional quantum computer, from large-scale superconducting systems that require enormous cooling to smaller silicon-based spin qubits that focus on precision and quality. Beyond the science, we talk about the politics and funding shaping the industry, the role of global tech giants, and the opportunities for Australia to compete on the world stage. Will also shares what career pathways in quantum look like today, from theoretical research and fabrication to software integration and finance. The episode closes with practical advice on how to stay informed without getting overwhelmed by technical jargon or hype, including the best reports, associations, and even simple primers to start with.
