Parents, today we continue our series on the weapons of influence.In Part 1, I talked about reciprocity and liking. In this episode, I want to focus on two more powerful principles that shape human behavior.Authority and social proof.These two principles are influencing your children every single day whether they realize it or not.Authority is powerful because people tend to follow those they believe have credibility, expertise, or power. But authority can be used in two ways. It can be used to control, or it can be used to serve.As parents, our role is not just to have authority, but to use it in a way that builds trust, provides guidance, and creates a safe environment for our children.I also talk about what I call appointed authority versus anointed authority. One is based on position. The other is based on influence, trust, and leadership.The second principle is social proof.This is the tendency to follow the crowd. When people are unsure, they look to others to decide what is right or acceptable.We saw this on a global level during COVID.
