S2E12: The Mountain King

Welcome back to Mad Men & Tonic! It’s S2E12, “The Mountain King,” aka, when Mad Men’s men react poorly to disempowerment. K&E mix too many Hurricanes and erupt with a geyser of new podcast ideas, even though they can barely handle this one. (Drink lesson at 1:20; episode discussion at 5:27). The rest of this one is filled with lessons: Kristina teaches Elias about the miracle of life, Elias teaches Kristina a new word, and nobody teaches either of them how to do math or read Tarot cards. Plus, an alternative Don Draper timeline! *Correction: Don and Anna’s flashback scene at the car dealership occurs in S2E7, not S2E9. TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNING: This episode of Mad Men includes a graphic rape scene. Our discussion of that scene begins at approximately 1:16:32 and ends at approximately 1:29:21, and also includes adjacent discussions about sexual abuse in media, including “Lolita” and adjacently, child sexual abuse.
