S2E18 - The Challenges of Treating Endometriosis in Nigeria, with Dr. Olajuwon Alabi

from Not Defined by Endo · host Teniola Ogunro

Today's episode is with Dr. Olajuwon Alabi. Dr. Juwon is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, the founder and Medical Director of Southshore Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Lagos Nigeria. Southshore is run both in Victoria Island and GRA Ikeja in Lagos. Dr. Juwon trained in Nigeria and also in Manchester and Leeds in the United Kingdom. He was trained in Minimal Access Surgery and developed interest in this subspecialty, and there got involved in a lot of Endometriosis cases. On his return to Nigeria, he realised the skills gap in laparoscopic surgery and decided in 2012 to start Southshore, which focuses predominantly on women’s health. One of their specialties is the treatment of fibroids and endometriosis, he is an excision specialist and today I am excited to talk about what it is like treating endometriosis patients in Nigeria. We discuss the challenges, and we receive golden advice from Dr. Juwon on dealing with this disease. Dr. Juwon has an Instagram account as well @drjuwonalabi for those who want to reach out to him.
