S2E9: Jane Hallman – a scrub tech’s perspective on the evolution of OR culture

from The WISER Podcast

Jane Hallman is an OR scrub tech who has been working at Emory for over two decades. She was born in Carrolton, GA, and initially became interested in the health field through her grandparents, who started a hospital. She ended up following her mother’s path and became a teacher. Jane taught preschool for many years before transitioning to being a scrub tech. She has now been at Emory for 23 years, having witnessed many a student turn into resident turn into attending. She’s seen it all. The birth of laparoscopic surgery and its growing pains, an era where all surgeons were men, and the shift to a surgical residency of >50% women. With that, there has been changes in culture, which have been mostly for the better. Listen here to join in on our conversation with Jane about the evolution of operating room culture, culprits of disruptive behavior, and how to turn that around to foster an efficient, enjoyable, and inclusive workplace environment.
