Have you ever wondered what happens when a country decides that retirement should come with a little sunshine, a nice hotel, and a holiday?Well… Spain has an answer for that.It’s called Imserso, and if you’re visiting Spain and suddenly notice thousands of Spanish retirees heading to the coast in the middle of winter, there’s a very good chance they’re on an Imserso holiday.And honestly, it’s one of those wonderfully Spanish things that deserves a little explanation.The idea began back in 1978, originally as a way of giving older people, particularly those who lived alone, the opportunity to enjoy holidays and social activities. But there was another clever idea behind it: keeping hotels, restaurants, transport companies and other tourism businesses working during Spain’s quieter months.Fast-forward forty years, and the programme has become a remarkably large operation.For the 2026–27 season, almost 880,000 places are being offered, covering Spain’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, the Balearic and Canary Islands, cultural circuits, nature trips, provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla.And here’s the part that might make you raise an eyebrow.A nine-night coastal holiday can start at around €309, including accommodation, full board and transport in many cases. There’s even a specially reserved group of places costing just €50 for people with particularly limited financial resources.So who can actually go? What are the requirements? How does Spain decide who gets a place? Who pays for it?
