He received an MFA in creative writing at Northwestern University and a BA at the University of Iowa. Previously he served as the managing editor for TriQuarterly, editorial assistant at Dalkey Archive Press, and managing editor of Curbside Splendor Publishing. He grew up on a farm and ran an ice cream shop in rural Illinois until he moved to Chicago. In addition to writing & publishing, he is a printmaker and makes music, currently with the Iowa country band Gold Dust.
