S3E8 Social Democracy
from Life Workshop Hosted by Mo Nazari
I believe a country should be run more like a company. In a company, the CEO is chosen by a board of directors who understand the job, know the candidates, and have a process for evaluating them. A leader's most important quality should be the ability to lead. If they have some minor flaws, that's normal—they are human beings. We do not need to treat political leaders as if they are perfect or chosen by God. And, of course, not everyone even believes in the same God. Some social rules that are meant to create order can become overly restrictive and start to feel more like a form of dictatorship than a fair system. Many social movements and government institutions begin with good intentions. Examples include labor unions, social services, social justice movements e.g. Woke culture, and even some forms of centralized government. However, when there are no effective checks and balances, these systems can be abused or pushed too far. Instead of protecting fairness, they can become unfair themselves and slowly move a democratic society toward excessive control. A person's success or failure is partly the result of their own choices and efforts, but it is also influenced by their circumstances and the environment they live in. In a social democracy, the goal should be to give everyone as equal an opportunity as possible by creating fair conditions and access to resources.
